Blepharitis

What is it?

Blepharitis is the medical term for inflamed eyelids. The inflammation is like eczema of the skin with red, scaly eyelids.

Cause: Infection of the glands in the eyelid.

Red, tired or gritty eyes which may be uncomfortable in sunlight or a smoky atmosphere. Swelling, as well as frequent watering of the eye.

Conjunctivitis

What is it?

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva: the membrane which covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner parts of the eyelid.

Cause: Bacterial or viral infection or allergy.

Redness, watering, pain and itchiness, often with a sticky white discharge. The eyelids may be stuck together, and there may be discharge on the eyelashes.

Styes

What is it?

Styes develop when a gland at the edge of the eyelid becomes infected. Resembling a ‘pimple’ on the eyelid, styes can grow on the inside or outside of the lid.

Cause: Staphylococcal bacteria.

Pain, redness, tenderness and swelling, as well as frequent watering of the eye.
